This weekend I decided to try my hand at the DIY distressed tee trend that’s been making it’s way around Instagram lately and let me tell you it is worth the hype! I decided to put together a quick little how-to for you so that you can try it out too.
What you’ll need:
T-Shirt – Here is the one that I used: Queen Tee
The great thing about this DIY is that you can’t really mess it up. There’s no right or wrong way to distress a tshirt. You have free reign to make it look however you want, and in the end you have a one-of-a-kind look.
For my tee, I looked for graphic tees on Amazon and found a band tee that I thought was super cute! If you want an oversized look, I recommend going up at least 1 or 2 sizes.
First, I made a couple of small slits in the shoulder with my scissors and cut a couple triangle shapes on the bottom of the sleeves. Next, I cut the bottom of the shirt. To do this, I followed the hem of the shirt so that I could make sure I was cutting in a straight line and didn’t make the bottom look uneven. I love the look of a raw hemline, and I feel like it just completed the look of the distressed tshirt.
After I made all of the cuts I wanted to initially, I moved on to using my nail file to add some more small details. I found this worked best if I put my nail under the spot on the shirt I wanted to distressed and that helped to distress the shirt more quickly. Using the nail file will create small holes, and I also found that on the shirt I used it slightly changed the color of where I was filing.
Also keep in mind that each time you wash your shirt, it will likely get more distressed with each wash. Overall, I’m really happy with my results and I can’t wait to try this out with some more tees soon!
